A lectionary is a list of scripture readings for all the Sundays of the year. They were used in the early synagogues where a reading from Moses and from the Prophets, and, from the Wisdom literature was part of the basic synagogue (kinda like a Jewish church service) service. So when the early church met [...]

This past Sunday we took a slight detour from our series of lectionary readings through the Old Testament books of the Major Prophets, and looked instead at an alternate lectionary selection from Proverbs. The theme of the Proverbs reading was the same; the tone, however, was more appropriate for our multi-cultural gathering.
For those of you [...]

This Sunday (August 29) is our regular multicultural service. It’s a good time to get a taste of worship in different languages. There’s always a sense of divine favor on the service. I think God really likes to see His children breaking down barriers and celebrating diversity in the context of unity.
Service time will be [...]

In a moment of worship Jesus finds someone with a need…
When sacred worship is reduced to a mere question of tradition and style, Jesus doesn’t stand on either side of the aisle. In fact he’s not even present in that debate. He’s outside doing what he can to alleviate the suffering of the helpless and [...]

Friday, 7 PM, main sanctuary
All summer a group of young people have been working on a concert to give to us. Since it’s good to encourage students to do good things it would be a very good thing to come hear them. I think you’ll be pleased with their level of mastery over the material.

found out that word–churchianity–has been in use for more than 100 years. Rats, thought I was being original.
Ok, assuming that Jesus was right when He said, “I will build my church” and the Apostle Paul was accurately inspired by the Holy Spirit when he explained that the church is the Body of Christ and that [...]
Can godly people get depressed? Missing point

there’s not going to be time this Sunday to include this point in the sermon. But I think it’s important enough to post…
Elijah’s bout of major depression. Lacking health insurance and available psychiatric care God sends a messenger—an angel—to take him through the process of healing. (Incidentally, God always seems to send a [...]

We were at the early stages of a 60 mile crossing of Lake Huron on a very windy day. Those who have never sailed the Great Lakes think of them as quiet little ponds with no threats and little challenge. Those who have sailed them know that some of the worst sea conditions on the [...]
